Russian moon mission

On August 11 Russia launched its first lunar mission since 1976. Russia's space sector has been sputtering for several years. Because of the war Roscosmos will not receive Western cooperation. The European Space Agency ended collaboration in 2022. The mission underscores Putin's claim that there is only a special military operation going on, so life can continue as normal. The rocket was launched from Vostochny Cosmodrome in East Siberia. The spacecraft is scheduled to start orbiting the moon on August 16. It will stay for at least 3 days before landing on the south pole. Lunar landings are usually in the equatorial zone. Russia is very proud that the landing will be in a place where no one has previously landed. Russia is very proud of its world-beating space exploratory achievements in the 1950s and 1960s and would like to revive this legacy. The aim of the mission is to gather soil samples for analysis. Russia often used a cosmodrome in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. But relations with Kazakhstan are not as cordial as they were only a few years ago.
