Russian parliamentary elections lead to victory for ruling party

The outcome is no surprise. The United Russia Party is the main pro-Kremlin party although Putin has not been a member for over 10 years. United Russia has 315 out of the 450 seats in the Duma.Turnout was fairly low. It is alleged that the government ordered civil servants and soldiers to vote. These people are assumed to be mostly supporters of United Russia.The election is a success for the Kremlin. There were no serious incidents. There appears to be no outcry despite claims of rigging by the opposition. The has avoided the scenario witnessed in Belarus in 2020.The government left nothing to chance. Google, YouTube and Apple deleted a smart voting app created by the opposition the day the elections commenced.Voting took place over three days. This was supposedly to mitigate coronavirus. Oppositionists say that this is to facilitate cheating. The Electoral Commission said the shift to 3-day polling is now permanent. United Russia's win is tainted by numerous accusations of bogus voting. Many videos have been posted on the internet purporting to show cheating. The Electoral Commission said there were only 12 cases of electoral fraud. The main voting monitoring NGO has been branded a foreign agent.The Communist Party also gained. It has long been the second biggest party.Alexey Navalny's supporters have been labelled extremist. They are therefore banned from participating. Some Navalnyites voted communist as that party stood the best chance of beating United Russia. This is ironic since the Communist Party agrees with United Russia on most things.
