Russian phone company agrees deal with Huawei

On June 6 Russia's main mobile phone company MTS signed a 5G deal with Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. This is in stark contrast to the US refuses to deal with Huawei and is seeking the extradition of a top Huawei executive from Canada on charges of sanctions busting.The Kremlin says the deal is a 'memorandum of understanding' suggesting the deal is not yet finalized. There are rumors that Russia is feeling too committed to China. Huawei is a market leader in AI and virtual cities. China is Russia's biggest trade partner. Relations are cordial but they do not always see eye to eye. There are some in the Russian establishment who are disquieted by the Huawei deal. The UK is also scheduled to sign an agreement with Huawei. The United States is lobbying the British not to do so saying that Huawei will spy on the UK. The Chinese Parliament passed a law in 2018 mandating all Chinese companies to assist the security services.
