Russian PMC struggling in Mozambique

In September 2019 200 men from the Russian Private Military Company (PMC) Wagner arrived in Mozambique. They are paid up to USD 3 000 per month which is much cheaper than other PMCs who bid for the job of assisting Mozambique defeat Islamic State. Islamic State is threatening the northern Cabo Delgado Province which is rich in gas. Wagner is believed to be connected to Yevgeny Prigozhin who is a protege of Putin. Mozambique's President Nyusi flew to Moscow in August 2019. It is speculated that Wagner's deployment was agreed then. Officially Wagner is not government controlled. Wagner also helps with political operations but using publicity to bolster the government.Wagner knows little of Mozambique's landscape of ethnic and political complexities. A Zimbabwean PMC commander John Gartner has commented that Wagner is floundering but as a business rival he would say that. But many other experts have corroborated Gartner's assesment. Wagner does not have a cordial relationship with the Mozambique Army. Wagner is active in Sudan, Libya and the Central African Republic.
