Russian Police arrest opposition

On September 12 police raided 150 buildings associated with opposition campaigners. Veteran anti-corruption campaigner Alexey Navalny has been arrested for the umpteenth time. Navalny's organization is called the Anti-Corruption Foundation. It has been accused of money laundering. The Russian Parliament wishes to investigate the organization on suspicion of receiving illegal foreign funding. Navalny has spent many brief spells in jail.The regional elections took place on September 8 and the ruling party United Russia performed worse than usual. This was partly due to Navalny urging people to vote against the United Russia Party. His smart voting guideline seem to have been heeded by many voters in Moscow. The authorities have finally run out of patience. Fairly large scale protests took place in various cities over the past two months. The protests are now petering out.
