Russian political, pandemic update: a clash of civilizations

RUSSIA ECONOMICS - Report 05 Jul 2022 by Evgeny Gavrilenkov and Alexander Kudrin

A peculiar mixture of political intolerance, stubbornness and aggressive self-confidence continues flourishing in geopolitics – at least in Russia-related matters. The fudge is an integral element of politics, and the question is whether populations are willing to tolerate this taradiddle or not. Currently, it looks as though they are. As the standoff between Russia and what is considered by the Russian political elite as the “collective West” intensifies, the clearer it becomes that the conflict between the two sides in Ukraine will last longer than anyone could expect four months ago. It now looks as though we are in the middle of an unreconcilable conflict between the two different civilizations, two alien civilizations on one planet that speak different languages and have different mentalities and habits.

The split between these civilizations is widening, and as fewer and fewer people on either side know about what is happening on the other side, the more passionate their “anti-other” feelings become. In such a situation Russia-related political risks will remain elevated as there are no signs that the conflict between the two civilizations can suddenly evaporate. People on either side cannot obtain unbiased information – it only becomes available after it gets spoiled (in fact, "censored") by political commentators. Each side considers news provided by the other side as either "fake news" or propaganda. If governments do that, it means they have something to hide, which points to various weaknesses and fears that alternative information may have an undesirable impact. There are weaknesses on both sides, and the person who accepts such a point of view must also accept that it will take a long time for the light to appear at the end of the tunnel.
