Sara Duterte: the impending impeachment and criminal case
Vice President Sara Duterte’s political prospects for 2028 have become increasingly complicated as the impeachment proceedings have subjected several serious allegations to sustained scrutiny. The Senate deliberations have put the questionable use of confidential funds under detailed examination, while her defense of the grave-threat allegations has faced scrutiny. Equally significant is the constitutional issue raised by her own SALN declaration that she continued to hold board positions in private companies even after assuming the vice presidency. Taken together, these proceedings have elevated questions not only about her political standing but also about the possible constitutional consequences for her eligibility to seek public office.
The separate criminal case for three counts of grave threats adds another layer of uncertainty. A Quezon City court has found probable cause and issued an arrest warrant, which was subsequently lifted after Duterte posted bail. Even if the impeachment does not prosper, including because of a possible dispute over the number of Senate votes required for conviction, the criminal case would continue independently. A final conviction, particularly if it results in imprisonment and applicable disqualification from public office, could create a direct legal obstacle to a 2028 presidential candidacy. Thus, the impeachment and criminal proceedings present two distinct but potentially consequential challenges to Duterte’s political future.
