Shelling in Ukraine as possible provocations loom

On February 17 Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels shelled each other in Eastern Ukraine. The Donetsk People's Republic stated that shelling had intensified dramatically. Kyiv accused rebels of shelling a kindergarten.The Kremlin called on Western countries to rein in Ukraine. On February 15 Putin said that Ukraine was committing genocide in Donbas. If that were true, then the argument for Russia to intervene would be irresistible. Russian media showed what it said were mass graves and said that Ukraine has chemical weapons that it could use in Donbas.Washington DC said that Russia was trying to create a bogus pretext for war. The US said the accusation of genocide was groundless. Many Russian commentators suggest a provocation to ensnare Russia in a military engagement in looming. Moscow said it has withdrawn some troops from near Ukraine. The US has said this is false. The United States accused Russia of sending another 7,000 soldiers to the border area.The Russian Foreign Ministry said when military drills in Belarus end on February 20 Russian troops participating in them will be withdrawn. There are always some Russian troops in Ukraine in normal times. But there are 10,000s more than usual in Belarus at the moment for drills. The German Chancellor was in Moscow for talks with Putin on February 15. Chancellor Scholz reaffirmed NATO's position and said there was no breakthrough.
