Slight drop in the temperature of the political crisis

The decision by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Minister, Celso de Mello, to archive the request from opposition parties to seize the cell phone of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, and his son, City Councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicanos-RJ), represents an important step towards moderating the institutional friction that has taken place in recent weeks. The discontinuance of the request reduces Celso de Mello´s tension with the government. However, Celso de Mello, in his decision, also sent messages to the Planalto Palace when he affirmed that the judiciary, when acting in the performance of its duties, does not hurt the separation of powers.

The Executive Branch has also made moves to reduce the temperature of the crisis. Yesterday, the day after the violent acts carried out on Avenida Paulista in São Paulo (SP) during the meeting of protesters for and against the president, Jair Bolsonaro asked his supporters not to participate in acts next Sunday.

The question is whether the easing of the crisis can coexist with the country´s increasing polarization. Despite the moves made in the political system, the climate in public opinion between Bolsonaristas and anti-Bolsonaristas remains tense.
