South Africa finally moves to recover looted public funds – at least some of it

At the beginning of the month, Eskom – South Africa’s embattled state utility that provides over 90% of the country’s electricity, alongside the state’s Special Investigating Unit (SIU), started legal proceedings against those implicated in corruption that saw the utility losing billions through state capture. Eskom and the SIU have issued summonses against these individuals. This indeed is encouraging as it signifies that the South African government is finally going after those whose corrupt actions saw money being syphoned from the state, particularly through state-owned entities (SOEs) over the past decade, and with the aim of recovering the stolen public funds.
