South Africa’s year of national elections: the ANC’s pre-election January 8 statement

Amidst what is likely to be the toughest year since taking power in South Africa after the fall of the apartheid government for the African National Congress (ANC), President Ramaphosa, who is both President of the governing ANC and the Republic, delivered the ANC’s customary January 8 Statement, marking the organization’s 112th anniversary (on January 13). This is because the annual delivery of the Party’s plans for both the organization itself and the country (as the governing party) comes as the country is preparing to hold the 2024 general elections—elections that for the first time since 1994 could see the ANC fail to obtain an outright majority.
