Special report—Russia increases arms trade with Iran over India

Russia and Iran are closing in on a major deal that will see two-way arms trade between them increase significantly over coming months and years. This is important for the conflict in Ukraine, where Russian inferiority in drones and unmanned craft was initially telling, but also across other areas, such as Syria, with Iran to get Russian fighter jets.

As the Red Sea strikes grow, and as Iran also feels tension with Pakistan, the union of the two—Russia and Iran—is a marker for a new age. The agreement will be strategic in nature and go beyond just defense, locking in a partnership that looked less likely even a few years ago. Meanwhile, India is buying fewer arms from Russia, although exchanging energy and other goods with Russia in a fashion not seen before.
