Sputnik V slowed by WHO's onerous bureaucracy - claims global backer

On December 2 the statement was made. The vaccine was registered in Russia in August 2020. Russia is very proud that it beat the world in registing the first vaccine. The vaccine is also a means for Russia to assert its soft power. It has produced a friendlier image of Russia in dozens of countries, especially developing ones. Sputnik is also popular because it is one of the cheapest vaccines.The Lancet said that the vaccine is 91% effective against the original coronavirus strain. However, since then several more strains have developed, and Sputnik V is less effective against them.The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) backed Sputnik V. Its CEO said that the vaccine is safe. He complained that registration is being delayed by undue bureaucratic hurdles but is confident that this will be forthcoming.The World Health Organization's sign-off on the vaccine has been slow because of complaints about manufacturing infringements and requests for more data.If the WHO approves the vaccine then it will be sold to even more countries. Over 100 countries are already using it. Sputnik is particularly popular Argentina. Despite Russia's marketing its vaccine very actively, it has not authorized foreign vaccines. RDIF said that the Gamaleya Center, which makes the vaccine, will be able to produce several hundred million boosters by February 2022. The Omicron variant means even those who are double vaccinated need another shot. Three billion doses could be made by the end of 2022.
