The Chamber of Deputies preferred to ignore the robust evidence and refused to allow the Supreme Court to judge the denunciation of receiving bribes lodged against President Temer by the Chief Prosecutor’s Office. It was a personal victory for Temer, but the fragmentation of the allied base, with important dissidence from the PSB and PSDB, indicates he will face difficulties in delivering reforms promised when seeking support to stay in office. Supported by the comfort of the correct diagnosis of a competent economic team and by the favorable external environment, asset prices suffered little even with a political situation unfavorable to fiscal discipline. Economic activity, employment and credit are finally showing positive signs, but the emergence from the recession will be irregular and very slow.
