Between June 1st and July 2nd, the number of COVID-19 deaths in Brazil doubled, from 31 thousand to 62 thousand, while the number of infected people nearly tripled, from 555 thousand to 1.5 million, only lower than the number recorded in the United States (2.8 million). The country has not had a health minister for the past 50 days, there are no signs of a drop in contagion, and social distancing measures have been relaxed or tightened according to the policy dictated by each mayor and/or governor. The deliberate absence of a national strategy to face the pandemic, provoked by the denialism of President Bolsonaro, has already left a somber legacy, both in the high number of victims and the deep recession. The political and economic consequences of that option will become clearer in the coming months.
