Despite a sometimes half-baked agenda, Brazilian society has been showing signs of maturity, vigor and appreciation for democracy. Siren calls from the extremes of the political spectrum do not entrance the majority, who continue to hope for a united and prosperous country. The recovery of consumption is continuing, inflation and interest rates remain low, but the Real has been experiencing strong depreciation. The global economic slowdown and associated decline of commodity prices are penalizing Brazil’s exports, and the still slow growth and high uncertainty provoked by erratic movements (and statements) of the government are deterring foreign capital, causing volatility and pressure on the exchange rate.
