The first sitting of the National Assembly took place on 22 May 2019 in Cape Town. This marks South Africa’s sixth democratic Parliament with 358 members officially sworn in by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng. The ruling party ANC (African National Congress) acquired 230 seats while the main opposition parties, the DA (Democratic Alliance) and EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) claimed 84 and 44 seats, respectively. Cyril Ramaphosa was also officially sworn in as the president of the state, while Thandi Modise replaced Baleka Mbete as the Speaker of the National Assembly and Lechesa Tsenoli returned as the Deputy Speaker.
