The ANC's Strongest Measure in Fighting Corruption within the Party- and perhaps in the country

Today, the ANC issued a formal letter notifying its Secretary General, Ace Magashule, of his temporary suspension. The letter, signed by the Deputy Secretary General (Jesse Duarte), confirms that Magashule is suspended temporarily pending the outcome of fraud and corruption charges he is facing. This is the strongest action yet taken by the ANC to cleans itself of corrupt elements and restore compliance with the rules and resolutions of the Party's constitution. It is also the most visible sign of change of balance of power within the ANC in favour of the Ramaphosa camp. Magashule has been openly defiant, challenging Ramaphosa and his supporters to take him into account. At one point, last week, he even hinted at a possibility of him leading some kind of mass mobilization if he was pushed too hard! Today, the Party has called his bluff, and laid a line in the sand. In the run up to today's ANC , two days ago, the Deputy Secretary General of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal Province, Mike Mabuyakhulu, stepped down voluntarily. He too was indicted in corruption charges.The promised moral renewal of the ANC has been a long and frustrating process. President Ramaphosa and his supporters have taken a long term view , taking a systematic and at times ultra-cautious steps to revive the rule of law and the culture of compliance within the Party. This has led to much social skepticism and doubt within the broader society about the motives and commitment of the Ramaphosa camp to cleansing the ANC from within.
