The biggest crisis of the Bolsonaro government so far

The resignation of Sergio Moro from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security – a consequence of the dismissal of the director-general of the Federal Police (PF), Maurício Valeixo – represents a major loss for the Jair Bolsonaro government. Added to the symbolism of his departure, especially given his image as a fighter of corruption in the Car Wash Operation, Moro’s bombastic speech – accusing President Jair Bolsonaro of politically intervening in the Federal Police and other crimes of responsibility – leaves the Planalto Palace even weaker and more isolated.

Today’s episode changes the Bolsonaro government. The model that began in 2019, when President Jair Bolsonaro abdicated direct negotiation with party presidents and leaders is no longer feasible. Now, Bolsonaro is resorting to traditional negotiation with the Centrão political leaders to garner support.

The political crisis triggered by Moro’s departure, combined with the coronavirus pandemic and the advancing economic crisis, may create the so-called “perfect storm”. This is what Bolsonaro is trying to avoid when resorting to negotiations with the Centrão. However, the cost of supporting the government is increasing. In this environment, the influence of his family and more ideologically-aligned advisors is likely to grow, further radicalizing Bolsonarismo.
