The consequences of Moro’s resignation

The exit of the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Sergio Moro, from the Bolsonaro administration on the heels of the dismissal of the general-director of the Federal Police, Maurício Valeixo, has the potential to provoke profound changes. It is important to note that Moro’s exit, as the most popular minister in the government – with a 53% approval rating in December 2019, according to Datafolha – comes only a few days after Luiz Henrique Mandetta (DEM-MS) was fired from the Ministry of Health, in the middle of Bolsonaro’s negotiations with the Centrão, and following the approval of investigations by the Federal Supreme Court into possible violations of National Security Law by organizers of last weekend’s demonstrations in favor of a military intervention and the AI-5 (closing of Congress and Federal Supreme Court). In this report, we review the immediate and longer term consequences of Moro's resignation.
