The only clarity is there is no clarity

The earthquake triggered a whole new conversation in politics and created a new political landscape, on which the politics author takes up two issues. The first is the timing of the elections. A majority of news articles now suggest that President Erdogan doesn’t intend to delay elections beyond 18 June. Unless he moves quickly in that direction in the next three weeks, it will be too late to alter the constitutionally determined poll date.

The opposition once again wasted a potentially solid surge in the polls, thanks to its aid efforts in the quake zone (which were comparatively better than those of the AKP-controlled official agencies), by embroiling in the never-ending debate of how one finds “an electable presidential candidate”, a creature as rare as a two-horned unicorn.

Take heart, though, dear reader, Turkey’s “Iron Lady”, Mrs. Aksener intends to end that debate on the March 2 Nation Alliance leaders’ summit. She will probably do so by conceding to Kilicdaroglu as the joint candidate to face Erdogan, but the prospect of her throwing her hat into the ring can’t be dismissed.
