The SA Government is making progress in tackling corruption, but the governing ANC is still stuck in the rot

SOUTH AFRICA - Report 24 Aug 2020 by Iraj Abedian

Corruption in government has been brought back into the spotlight by the many allegations of corrupt dealings regarding the monies related to the Covid-19 fiscal rescue package. This has led to President Ramaphosa's writing a letter (published on August 23) to members of his governing African National Congress (ANC) on the shame that has been brought upon the party because of corruption and therefore of the need to make things right. The President, who is also President of the ANC, reminded his comrades in the Party about the promise it made to the South African people about eradicating corruption during the previous general elections that saw its return to power, after having made the same pledge among its members during its all-important (54th) National Conference.

In the letter, the President highlights that on the back of the ANC’s last National Conference resolutions on corruption, a number of measures have been taken to root out corruption in the public sector. He noted that government has managed to restore the integrity and independence of law enforcement agencies, while providing them with the means to fight corruption effectively. As a case in point, he mentioned the work done on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA); that new leadership has been brought in at the agency, while at the same time an investigative directorate has been established to investigate and prosecute high level corruption, as has the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) Special Tribunal to ensure speedy civil claims against wrongdoers. It is worth remembering that as we reported earlier this month (in our Aug 13 Report), it is with the aid of the SIU that Eskom is currently working to recover R3.8 billion through a lawsuit against those implicated in looting the utility company over the past few years.
