The South African Economy Barely Manages to Grow During the Third Quarter

Statistics South Africa today reported that growth in real (inflation adjusted) Gross Domestic Product decelerated notably at a quarterly, seasonally adjusted annualized rate to 0.2% in the third quarter of 2016. This followed a relatively impressive upwardly adjusted growth rate of 3.5% (from 3.3%) during the second quarter. The third quarter’s outcome is, however, still much better than that of the first quarter, which showed a contraction in the South African economy. All of these are depicted in Graph 1, which also shows that economic growth has been very erratic, with quarters of relatively high growth usually followed by quarters of lower growth.
