The surprising results of the 2023 Census and their implications for public policy

Considering the latest census data, significant demographic trends are emerging in Panama, carrying implications for public policy. The population is exhibiting higher levels of education and is also aging. Women have progressed in terms of their socioeconomic condition, and there is a growing recognition of ethnic diversity within the population. Also, the population is shifting away from the urban center towards the outskirts, in particular the western side of the Canal, which is the new focal point of population growth. The percentage of foreigners in the population has increased, largely due to the influx of citizens from neighboring countries, driven by regional dynamics. Lastly, progress is evident in the material condition of households, although there is still room for improvement in terms of access to essential services.
