The Philippines is experiencing a surge of public mobilization against corruption, especially over alleged irregularities in flood control projects. While many rallies have focused on institutional reform and evidence-based accountability, a recent event pushing for President Marcos’s resignation has introduced a destabilizing political angle. That call emerged despite the absence of verified findings from an independent investigative body and appeared aligned with efforts to boost Vice President Sara Duterte, who herself faces unresolved questions over confidential funds and procurement issues.

The moment is marked by both civic awakening and political maneuvering. Without a strong, impartial mechanism—such as an empowered Independent Commission for Infrastructure—to establish the facts, any attempt to force leadership change risks undermining constitutional order and fracturing public unity. Filipinos overwhelmingly demand concrete proof of reforms: transparent procurement, credible budgeting, strong institutions, and improvements in public services.

The country now stands at a critical juncture. Meaningful progress depends on resisting partisan shortcuts and insisting that accountability applies to all leaders equally. Only through due process, unity, and institutional discipline can this public outcry lead to a stronger and more trustworthy democracy.
