Two new developments yesterday shook up the presidential race. The first was the surprising rise of Augusto Cury (Avante) in voting-intention polls. Cury gained 6.2 percentage points in the AtlasIntel poll, reaching 7.8%. In the Nexus/BTG poll, the Avante candidate climbed nine points to 11%. The other development was a decision by Superior Electoral Court (TSE) Justice Dias Toffoli to restrict the digital campaign of Missão presidential candidate Renan Santos. Toffoli ordered the suspension of Renan’s campaign advertising on the social media accounts reported to the Electoral Court, transfers from the Electoral Fund, and his right to participate in debates on radio, television, podcasts, and other media outlets, based on allegations that irregular accounts were used to distribute campaign content. Toffoli’s decision is unlikely to change the trajectory of the presidential race, but it could even win Santos some additional votes by fueling a narrative that he is being politically targeted. Toffoli’s decision was criticized by members of the TSE.
