This Thursday will seal Kuczynski's fate

Congress will receive President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Thursday 21st to listen his defense on the serious allegations that led to the approval of a vacancy motion on grounds of moral incapacity. Kuczynski is accused of lying about consulting work done for the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht. Congress’s investigating committee in charge of the Brazilian firms’ corruption scandals (Lava-jato) has made public and in detail the financial transfers to two firms, First Capital and Westfield Capital, the latter being the sole property of Kuczynski. The President contends that he was completely detached from the management of those firms and has admitted that he only worked directly on the financial structuring of one irrigation project, and that this was done while he was not holding a government post. The whole affair is the culmination of a severe confrontation between the Fuerza Popular party which has an absolute majority in Congress (72 out of 130 seats) and the executive branch. The motion to discuss the vacancy of the presidency was approved by 97 votes, so in theory it could be assumed that there will be enough votes to oust Kuczynski. However, there are heated discussions on whether the vacancy could be decided next Thursday under what many constitutional experts consider a lack of due process. According to the constitution if the President is to leave his post, Vice-President Martin Vizcarra should take up the presidency. However, several politicians are suggesting that both the First and Second Vice-Presidents should leave their posts and new elections be held.
