The Central Bank has just published the official figures for the number of tourist arrivals for the month of June. There is much fear that the negative information that has circulated in the international press about the Dominican Republic as a tourist destination as a result of unfortunate and unrelated tourist deaths result in a significant reduction in tourist arrivals in the coming months. The number of arrivals reached 485,400, 12,500 arrivals less than in June 2018. If the growth rate observed until May had been maintained in June, the arrivals should have reached 515,200. This means that the loss of arrivals was more than 42 thousand, which is equivalent to a reduction of 6% compared to the pace it had before that month. Although the fall seems modest compared to what was expected, July's reduction is expected to be greater.
