Transition: What to expect from AF?

ARGENTINA - Report 11 Nov 2019 by Esteban Fernández Medrano

Will Alberto Fernandez (AF) be able to lead the Peronist/Kirchnerist coalition with a certain degree of freedom, or will he struggle with requests from his political mentor, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, or her radicalized followers? Ever since Argentina’s return to democracy, in the early 80s, most of the electoral alliances between vice-presidents and presidents have gone sour. Therefore, we see AF's choices in developing his own political strength as similar to those faced by his former superior, Nestor Kirchner (NK) when he took office, i.e., to build on his relationship with governors.

The political direction and ideology of AF's presidency will become more apparent when he will have to make decisions, and one of his first political decisions, which will be carefully scrutinized, will be the composition of his first cabinet, and who will lead the crucial committees in congress. In addition to these domestic steps to consolidate his presidency, AF is nourishing the desire to be seen as a regional reference for a new center-left renaissance in Latam.

On the economic front, as often happens in new governments, in particular with populist ones, the initial wish-list tends to have objectives that contradict one other. We also discuss the challenges of the new administration in this report.
