​Trump Erdogan summit: A waste of plane tickets

It is noon time in Turkey and it seems I wasted half a day to write my traditional post-summit brief on the Trump and Erdogan summit which appeared to be a waste of plane tickets for Erdogan and his large retinue.So far, there is no tantalizing background tidbits in Turkish press and what I can gather from foreign press sources is that there has been no progress in the issues that separate Turkey and US. Furthermore, there is no new information whether the US Congress intends to move ahead with the several sanctions bills which had been advanced prior to Erdogan visit, though Erdogan’s heated exchanges with five Republican Senators suggest the efforts will continue. There had been three meetings during the summit. One among diplomatic teams, one between Trump and Erdogan and finally when Erdogan met Lindsey Graham, Rick Scott, Jim Risch along with Ted Cruz and Joni Ernst. We do know that US support for YPG-PYD will continue and US will not allow Turkey to expand its Syrian safe zone towards East or South, which remain nominally under YPG-PYD control, because these facts had been stated by Trump. Had there been any progress in terms of the extradition of pastor Fethullah Gulen, the mastermind of the 2016 abortive coup or the ongoing federal Iran violations case against state lender Halkbank, Erdogan would be the first to announce it with a megaphone. This leaves the issue of S-400s and Turkey’s withdrawal from Syria.On these topics, there are only two sources of in-depth analysis.
