UK sends arms to Ukraine

On January 17 the British Defense Secretary announced the shipment of anti-armor defensive weapons and some training personnel. London emphasized that these weapons are short range and do not menace Russia. The number of system sent has not been disclosed. The same day, the UK invited the Russian Defense Secretary to London for talks.According to reports on January 9 Canadian Special Forces arrived in Ukraine. Canada has not commented on the report.The shipments and the dispatch of trainers to Ukraine is precisely what Moscow does not want. However, the shipments and the number of training personnel sent are presumably not so large as to provoke Russia to attack.On January 14 the Kremlin said sending NATO forces to Ukraine would be crossing another red line. In early January 2021 some Russian diplomats were withdrawn from Kyiv. Some took this as a signal of imminent war. Moscow denies that it has withdrawn any diplomats.
