Ukraine asks for talks with Russia to calm tensions

On December 1 Zelensky made the suggestion amidst Ukrainian claims that Russia is preparing a full-scale invasion. Moscow appears dismissive of the need for talks. It says that the Ukraine conflict is an internal Ukrainian affair. Russia says it has never aided pro-Russian rebels there, and the Russian fighters alongside them are volunteers and not Russian soldiers.On December 2 the US and Russian foreign ministers will meet in Sweden. It will be part of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe summit. No doubt Antony Blinken shall broach Ukraine, and Lavrov will say he has no influence over the protagonists. But if that is so, why has Putin met Zelensky and his predecessor several times specifically to discuss the conflict? Why has Russia signed the Minsk Accords on ending the fighting? Zelensky said that Ukraine can only end the conflict with Russian cooperation.Donbas and Luhansk are two eastern regions that were lost to the Ukrainian government in 2014. A ''People's Republic'' has been established in each of them. There is also Crimea, which Russia claims as an integral portion of its territory and which most countries recognize as Ukrainian. Ukraine wants to join NATO. Moscow has said that is a red line. Ukraine has certainly been armed by NATO. Russia denies sending weapons to the Luhansk People's Republic and the Donbas People's Republic. There was a build up of Russian troops on the Ukrainian Border in spring 2021 but nothing transpired. The current build up could be an exercise or a warning to Ukraine not try to retake Donbas and Luhansk.Moscow has said that Ukraine has moved tens of thousands of soldiers near Luhansk and Donbas.
