Ukraine bombards Russian city

On January 3 Russia said that Belgorod was attacked by a Ukrainian missile. The city is close to the Ukrainian border and was hit by Ukrainian fire several times in December 2023. Russia regards these as terrorist attacks. Russia claims to have shot down a lot of Ukrainian missiles over Belgorod, and only 1 person was killed by the missiles.  Belgorod is of no great strategic significance. Most Russian logistics for the Ukraine campaign come via other cities, particularly Rostov on Don. Belgorod is targeted simply because it is the closest Russian city to Ukraine. Ukraine appears to be lashing out in rage because of Russian attacks on its cities. Zelensky publicly vowed vengeance in December 2023.  On December 30 Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod killed 25 civilians—so Russia claimed. The region is seeking to mitigate risk by extending school holidays. Many buildings need repair due to these aerial attacks.  Because Belgorod was struck, the Russians have retaliated. They have attacked Kyiv and Odesa. Since December 29 there have been 6 days of Russian attacks on Ukraine. Even Lviv was struck. This is the westernmost city and was virtually unscathed until now. Over 60 Ukrainian civilians have been killed since December 29 according to Ukraine.  Ukraine is running low on munitions. Attacking an unimportant city is probably a waste of munitions.
