Ukraine claims it killed traitor politician

On December 6 Kyiv said that the former deputy in the Ukrainian Parliament who defected to Russia was shot dead by its operative outside Moscow. Ilya Kyva had been tried in absentia in a Ukrainian court for high treason and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Kyva had repeatedly gone on Russian TV and called for Ukraine's absorption into Russia. An SBU spokesman said that other traitors would meet the same fate. On December 6 Ukraine killed a pro-Russian politician in Luhansk, one of the Russian-occupied cities in East Ukraine. These slayings are a morale boost for Ukraine. They also distract from the strategic situation. Ukraine's counter-offensive has failed. Its attacks east of the River Dnipro have made minimal progress. Ukraine is struggling to hold Avdiivka. Russia aerial bombardment of Kyiv has intensified since November 2023. These assassinations are a rare success, especially as the flow of Western arms is slowing and perhaps stopping. Ukraine used to be taciturn about operations inside Russia. But in recent months it has grown increasingly candid about carrying out attacks across the border.
