Ukraine going to the polls

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 30 Mar 2019 by Alex Teddy

Volodymyr Zelenskiy is the frontrunner on 24.8% according to the Razmukov Center. President Poroshenko is on 22% in the same poll. Yulia Tymoshenko is rated at 14.8%. As Poroshenko controls the election commission it might be who counts the votes and not who gets most votes that counts! One thing that every poll agrees on is that Zelenskiy is coming first. A few polls a couple of weeks ago put Tymoshenko in second place but Poroshenko appears to have overtaken here. Note that there is only 2.8% points between the top two candidates. In Ukraine this is within the margin of error. As is typical for elections around the world the incumbent has clawed back support at the eleventh hour. People are thinking better the devil you know. This is partly owing to undecided voters plumping for him at the last minute. He has sharply increased income support in poverty stricken regions this month. Moreover, the US still backs him. Zelenskiy is a comedian and many people believe he has no political agenda and is the puppet of an exiled Ukrainian oligarch named Kolomoisky. But that could be wrong. It is possible that Zelenskiy has ideas of his own. It is rumored that he us part of an anti-Poroshenko alliance including Avakov (the interior minister). If push comes to shove Tymoshenko would probably back Zelenskiy over Poroshenko. The first round of the election is on 31 March.
