Ukraine sanctions Belarus

On November 20 Kyiv announced sanctions against Belarus. Ukraine did this along with Northern Macedonia and Montenegro. These three countries are striving to be accepted into the EU. Ukraine said the move was due to the violent crackdown against peaceful protesters. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans for 50 top officials. Belarus is now under sanctions from almost every European country (whether EU or not) except Russia. Until now Ukraine and Belarus had fairly good relations. Ukraine did not want another enemy. They chose not to voice an opinion on Belarus' internal affairs. Despite Zelensky and Lukashenka disagreeing on most things they had a warm personal relationship. This was much criticized by liberals in Ukraine. On November 19 the EU extended its sanctions. Certain companies and institutions will be sanctioned . The list of these has not yet been finalized. The Belarussian economy is going to suffer even more. This will deepen Lukashenka's unpopularity. It will also increase his dependence on Russia. Russia will have to increase financial support reluctantly.
