Ukraine using US-made ATACMS

On October 17 Zelensky announced that the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) had been used by Ukraine for the first time. He praised them for their efficacy but did not say what targets they hit. They have a 300-km range. The US did not announce that ATACMS have been delivered but leaks in the US media in September 2023 said that these missiles would be supplied. Ukraine has been begging for them since 2022. On October 17 Ukraine said it hit two airfields in Russian occupied Ukraine and destroyed 9 helicopters. It is not known of this was using ATACMS. Ukrainian Special Forces were announced to have carried out the attack. Russia claims that ATACMS were used in one of these attacks. Russia has often threatened unspecified repercussions if the West provides long range weapons to Ukraine. It blames the West for providing Ukraine with arms and thereby prolonging the war. However, Moscow has been strangely unreactive about ATACMS. As Putin is in China perhaps it would be a bad look for him to acknowledge now that Western military aid to Ukraine involves ever more sophisticated armaments.
