Ukraine wins Eurovision and stalls Russia in East Ukraine

On May 14 Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest. It is suspected that other countries voted for Ukraine more out of political solidarity than for musical merit. The singer said from the stage, ''Please help Ukraine and help Mariupol!'' He was referring to the Ukrainian city where hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers are surrounded.President Zelensky said that the situation in Donbas is very hard for Ukraine but he is confident his country will win even if it takes several years.Zelensky reminded the world that Russia has caused a global food paucity. Ukraine is a major exporter of grain and sunflower oil.Finland submitted its formal application to NATO on Sunday May 15. The fact that it did it on a Sunday underscores the urgency of the move. Russia claims the war is going well. It gives daily updates and mentions many towns in east Ukraine as the scene of fighting. It also gives a tally of Ukrainian assets that it claims to have destroyed such as over 3,000 tanks and armored vehicles. That would be all the tanks and armored vehicles Ukraine had. Ukrainian military intelligence said on May 14 that the war will reach a tipping point in August 2022 and Russia could lose by the end of 2022. Russia claims to have 900,000 troops and 200,000 were committed to Ukraine. NATO estimates that 50,000 are killed, wounded or captured. Russia cannot send even half its troops to Ukraine because it has thousands of km of borders to guard. Moreover, Russia is struggling to supply its forces in Ukraine and cannot replace the losses of equipment sustained in the war. Sanctions will make it even harder for Russia to continue the war.
