Ukrainian budget is reasonable and optimistic

On September 15 the Ukrainian Government published its budget for 2020. The budget is based on predicted GDP growth of 3.3%. The World Bank estimates it will be 3.4%.Subsidies to keep utility prices low are being slashed from USD 2.2 million this year to USD 1.9 million in 2020. As there might be problems with gas supply this subsidy cut could cause political pain. The defense budget will increase from USD 8.6 billion to USD 9.9 billion. The US provided about 5% of the Ukrainian defense budget in 2019. The road repair budget will be USD 2.8 billion which is almost a 30% increase. The roads in rural areas are often in a parlous state.The government estimates it will earn USD 203 million for privatizations. This is lower than in some previous years.
