UN discusses Azerbaijani blockade of Armenian-held land

On August 16 the UN Security Council discussed Azerbaijan's blockade of the Lachin Corridor. But it did not decide on action. The Red Cross has said that it urgently needs to deliver humanitarian aid. The UN wants this to resume. Lachin is critically short of medicine and food. The Armenian ambassador said the situation is terrible and 40 people have died from it. It will be worse in winter with energy shortages. A former International Criminal Court prosecutor said it was genocide. Azerbaijan has been blocking the road since June 2023. Azerbaijan has offered supplies to the blockaded area. The area is in Nagorno Karabakh, which is legally Azerbaijani but has been Armenian controlled since 1991. The 2020 war between Armenia and Azerbaijan ended in a peace treaty that stated 2,000 Russian peacekeepers would keep the Lachin Corridor open. Russia has sent most of them to Ukraine and does not wish to offend Azerbaijan by taking Armenia's side.
