UN inspects Ukrainian nuclear plant

On August 26 the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) completed its inspection of the Zaporizhzhia plant. The plant is in Russian hands. IAEA is a UN agency. Ukraine has now said that Russia has cut the plant off from the power grid. This leaves much of Ukraine without electricity. It is the largest nuclear facility in Europe.  Zelensky said that the world had come close to a nuclear disaster. Russian troops at the plant were shelling the Ukrainians. Ukraine did not dare hit back for fear of hitting the plant. Russia blamed Ukraine for causing the risk. On August 26 the EU held an emergency summit to discuss the energy crisis caused by the war. Energy prices have started to skyrocket. Energy prices for 2023 are due to be 10 times higher than in 2022. On August 26 Norway said it would apply EU sanctions on Russia despite not being an EU member. On August 26 TotalEnergies said it was divesting from a Russian gas field because some of the fuel was used by the Russian Air Force. It is selling its 49% stake in the Temokarstovoye Field to Novatek. TotalEnergies was the only major EU company still involved in Russian energy.
