US and Russia row over Venezuela

On May 19 the US blocked a UN resolution condemning the use of mercenaries in Venezuela. Russia said there was a conspiracy to overthrow President Maduro who is pro-Russian. Maduro said the plot was conceived in Washington DC and his army defeated a seaborne invasion. People have been arrested in conjunction with this including two former US soldiers. The United States said the allegations were false and hit back by noting that there are Russian troops in Venezuela. The difference is that the Russian soldiers are there at the request of the Venezuelan Government. The US and 50 other countries recognize Juan Guaido as President of Venezuela. But Nicolas Maduro is the president who holds power.
