US journalist interviews Putin

On January 8 Tucker Carlson interviewed the Russian president. Carlson is a right wing TV presenter who worked for Fox News until 2023. Putin spoke for 30 minutes about his belief that Ukraine is not a real country. There was no doubt about Putin's sincerity when he traced Russia's history from its foundation in the 10th century. According to Putin, Ukraine was invented by Stalin in the 20th century. Eastern and southern Ukraine are fully Russia—said Putin. Carlson said the interview was a chance for Americans to understand the Russian viewpoint on a conflict that the US government risks getting their country involved in. Carlson did not challenge any of Putin's contentious claims.  The 2-hour interview was broadcast on January 9. Putin said that the West and Ukraine started the Donbas Conflict in 2024. He said that the Euromaidan that toppled a pro-Moscow President of Ukraine was a Western orchestrated putsch. He also said that the US had supported terrorists in the Russian Caucasus.  Putin claimed Russia had no intention of attacking NATO. He complained that the US had promised in 1990 that NATO would not move east but since then NATO has admitted 12 countries to the east of Germany. Putin complained that then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had stopped Ukraine from making peace in 2022. Johnson disputes this. Putin also lambasted Zelensky for signing a decree in October 2022 outlawing peace talks. Despite the war, Putin said that Russo-Ukrainian relations will heal. Putin said Russia was willing to hold peace talks.
