US sanctions on countries accused of supplying Russia

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 04 Nov 2023 by Alex Teddy

On November 3 the US said it was sanctioning individuals and entities whom it believes are enabling Russia to prosecute its war in Ukraine. The people and entities are from the United Arab Emirates, China and Turkey. Russia is sourcing technology and equipment for its armed forces from abroad. Russia is accused of buying dual-use items abroad and using them for military applications. Those sanctioned have all their sanctioned property frozen in the US. US companies and entities are not permitted to deal with them. 130 people and entities are on the new sanctions list. Berk Turken is a Turk who is allegedly linked to Russian foreign intelligence. He is accused of using the UAE to help circumvent restrictions on Russia's access to the world financial system. 7 Russian banks have been sanctioned. The US is sanctioning Russia's energy production, metals, mining sector, defense procurement and revenue. 13 entities were sanctioned for enabling Russia's military procurement, particularly of drones. One of these is in Uzbekistan. No Kazakh party is on the list. The Kazakhs clearly did enough earlier in 2023 to persuade the West that they are complying with sanctions. It is perhaps surprising that smaller former Soviet states such as Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia are not on the list.
