US sanctions on Russian pipeline alarm Germany

On December 20 the US Congress approved further sanctions on Russia. Trump signed the bill. The latest round of sanctions is aimed at the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline. The US 11 billion pipeline is from Russia to Germany passing through Denmark's territorial water. The Germans say the sanctions meddles in their internal affairs. The EU has also hit out at the US over the sanctions. Germany desperately needs Russian gas to keep energy bills down. Gazprom owns the pipeline. The US fears that Russia will be able to bend the EU to its will by threatening to cut off the gas. Americans are also concerned about using their share of the EU energy market. Russia supplies 40% of the EU's gas with even more coming from Norway. Allseas is a Swiss-Dutch company that was involved in Nord Stream 2. It has now pulled out due to sanctions.Once Nord Stream 2 is online Russia will be sending 55 billion cubic meters of gas a year under the Baltic Sea.
