On January 19 Antony Blinken arrived in Kyiv for talks. The US warned Ukraine that Russia could attack any moment. Diplomatic efforts between the West and Russia have come to nought. Ukrainians are hurt that the US negotiated about them in their absence. However, the US made no concession to Russia. Blinken is there to reassure Kyiv. Blinken will meet President Zelensky. The US said Russia is entirely to blame for tensions. Russia says that it is Ukraine that is to blame and that Russia has no plan to invade. Russia's rhetoric and military buildup is partly aimed inward. With roaring inflation and economic stagnation the government is keen to divert attention.The US says it wants to de-escalate the situation. Thus far there is no meeting of minds on how to do this. Moscow has ruled out more talks until the West answers its demands for legally binding security guarantees. The US is dubious that Russia wants a diplomatic solution. But if that is so, why has Russia not invaded Ukraine already?On January 20 Blinken will be in Berlin for talks with EU and British leaders.Draft Belarusian constitutional reforms seem to allow Russian nuclear arms to be stationed there, said Washington DC. On January 18 joint Belarusian-Russian Army drills alarmed NATO. In fact such exercises are routine.
