US vows more sanctions on Russia and more arms for Ukraine

On April 4 the US National Security adviser made the pledge. He said that the US was negotiating with the EU on a new round of sanctions. The US also said there should be a war crimes investigation into alleged Russian atrocities in Ukraine. The US claims Russia has been defeated in northern Ukraine, which is why it is switching its focus to the east. Washington expects the war to last for months.Biden dubbed Putin ''a war criminal'' and called for a trial.There will be a NATO conference on April 7 in Brussels. The US Secretary of State shall attend.Ukraine wants more arms to be able to hit Russian troops far away. Kyiv asked for fighter jets, tanks and air defense systems. NATO countries are divided on which weapons to supply and how. They are anxious not to provoke Russia overmuch.The US said it is considering furnishing Ukraine with longer range anti-aircraft weapons, artillery and coastal defense systems. NATO might provide Soviet-made hardware that the Ukrainians have already been trained on. Countries such as Slovakia, Poland and Bulgaria still possess some Soviet-era weaponry. The US did not provide specificity on the weapons it wishes to donate.
