Uzbekistan prolongs quarantine

On July 27 Uzbekistan announced that coronavirus quarantine measures will last until August 15. They had been due to expire on July 31. Significantly, this means that quarantine will last through a key Islamic festival. The country is 95% Muslim. On August 1-2 all public transport will be banned. Because of the festival many people would usually travel at this time. That would be a recipe for disaster in terms of coronavirus. Non-essential stores have closed. Weddings have been postponed. Gatherings of more than 3 people outside the home are forbidden. There are officially 21 000 cases of coronavirus in the country and only 117 deaths. In a country of 32 000 000 these figures are very, very good. However, few experts trust governmental statistics.
