Uzbekistan receives USD 10 million from Gulnara Karimova

On February 15 the government announced that it had recovered assets that it says the daughter of the late president misappropriated. The money was returned from France. Uzbekistan is working with Switzerland, the USA, France, Russia to recover more of Gulnara Karimova's assets.A multiparty trust fund is being established by the UN. The Uzbek government estimates that USD 13 million is ready to be returned to Uzbekistan. Moscow City Court says it recognizes Uzbek judicial rulings on Karimova's assets. The court may liquidate her property in Moscow and give it to Uzbekistan. Switzerland returned Karimova's assets in 2020 when Uzbekistan signed an agreement to use the money to benefit the people. The Swiss froze USD 864 million of Karimova's assets in 2012. Over USD 31 million has been returned. Tashkent is seeking USD 1 billion from various countries. Karimova has been in custody since 2014. She has been convicted of having engaged in a huge bribery and extortion scheme. She made most of her money from telecommunications. In 2020 Karimova offered the government to give back USD 696 million in exchange for freedom.
