Politics: Virtual presidential nominees face multiple challenges as Morena nomination process hits a major speed bump

The unity pact that all the 4T presidential hopefuls signed on to at the outset of the Morena candidate selection process didn’t survive the irregularities that Marcelo Ebrard called out. It is not yet clear what the former foreign affairs minister’s next move will be, but he has done nothing to facilitate the tough work Claudia Sheinbaum, an uncharismatic candidate, must undertake to get her campaign off on a strong footing.

Meanwhile, Xóchitl Gálvez, her main rival for the presidency, is facing a tough path herself as she needs to significantly flesh out her proposals and hopefully lead a national campaign with the help of strong down-ballot nominees. However, at this point it looks like the process of choosing most of the Front for Mexico’s congressional, gubernatorial and municipal candidates will be controlled by PAN, PRI and PRD party leaders.
